This weekend, the public will be able to try out all the activities at the top of Copenhagen’s brand-new incineration plant for the first time. The opening concludes the final stage of this special Artelia project

Way back in October 2009, we learned that we had won the engineering consultancy bid for the construction work for a completely new waste incineration plant to replace the old Amager incineration plant. That is before BIG Bjarke Ingels Group won the architectural competition in 2011 with a convincing design proposal and the original idea of placing a ski run on top of the facility. An architectural concept that contributed to exciting engineering challenges that were way out of the ordinary

Since the outset, more than 200 different Artelia employees have been involved in the project at one time or another, giving us the opportunity to cultivate our interdisciplinary skills and bring creative synergies into play between different disciplines.

As shown in the video below, we were fortunate enough to be allowed to test out the slopes during our summer office outing in August.

Award-winning engineering
Back in 2015, our work was honoured with a Tekla Global BIM Award for the way in which we used digital tools.

In explaining their choice of winner for the award , the international jury wrote: “The multifunctional industrial design is an ambitious vision of how a green energy plant can be combined with recreational areas that encourage adventure, play and movement (…) the plant exhibits a superb use of steel – both as a visible material and as optimised structural steel – united in an international-class facility.”
