Indoor Climate & Energy Design

Energy consumption requirements are constantly being tightened, while there is increasing evidence of the benefits of a good indoor climate. At Artelia, we can fulfil every ambition for comfort and sustainability. We create optimum balance between the different factors to be taken into account, and have developed groundbreaking simulation tools to strengthen our role as a sounding board in the early design phase.

Difficult balancing act

We stay indoors up to 90% of the time. Improving the indoor climate at workplaces is therefore directly reflected in increased employee satisfaction and a clear reduction of absence due to illness. In general, there is good reason to focus on the indoor climate.

A good indoor climate also includes access to daylight, and when we incorporate energy consumption and a large number of other factors in the same equation, it is necessary to consider buildings from a holistic perspective.  We combine this approach with our strong expertise within indoor climate and energy reduction measures.

Making the right start
We are dedicated to being the architect’s preferred sounding board in the early design phase. Our innovation unit Artelia | BuildingDesign, for example, is behind the development of a completely new simulation tool that makes it possible to take a look at the architect’s drawings and explore a multitude of opportunities to ensure an optimum indoor climate and minimal energy consumption.

We work with specially developed BIM tools to create intelligent building design

We contribute constructive ideas for passive indoor climate management in the form of daylight utilisation and passive solar heating, which can be optimised through design, as well as the orientation of the building and its facades. Our employees also contribute the latest knowledge within advanced management of natural and mechanical ventilation and cooling.

Project design also includes interdisciplinary analyses using advanced simulation tools such as IESVE, BSim and CFD simulation. BSim offers a collection of advanced tools for simulation and calculation of e.g. thermal indoor climate, energy consumption, daylight, moisture, natural ventilation and electrical performance from building-integrated solar cells.

We therefore also focus on the early design phase, where we can contribute valuable inputs to the development of ideas. Here, we use BIM and custom-developed tools to create effective and intelligent building design.

We are raising the bar for a healthy indoor climate

A healthy indoor climate is an important step towards better public health – one of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. Through several initiatives, Artelia is improving the indoor climate in schools, new homes, and renovated homes.

Outstanding office enviroments

The office building at Amerika Plads offers an ambitious framework to support employee satisfaction.

Indoor climate readings

Artelia has advanced equipment for measuring ambient room temperature, humidity, vapour pressure, air velocity, noise, lighting conditions, CO2 concentration and surface temperature. We can carry out random tests and take long-term readings. This enables us to closely examine individual situations, such the local indoor climate around a workstation, or the overall indoor climate for the entire workplace. In order to incorporate user perception of the indoor climate, we also carry out surveys to establish satisfaction level and what is the highest priority for users.

Our surveys conclude with a report on the results and recommendations on how to tackle indoor climate and what measures can be taken to improve it. Our reports attach great importance to translating figures and readings into options for action.

If your building has an advanced CTS facility, we can also create value by combining indoor climate competences with our extensive know-how within commissioning. We can help optimise systems to focus on indoor climate and operating costs.

Artelia BuildingDesign

“Engineering science used creatively to meet your architectural visions”

Our innovation unit, Artelia BuildingDesign, focuses on the early design phase, as decisions are made that are essential for the building’s indoor climate and energy consumption. An important area, as otherwise there is a risk of having to go through expensive and difficult symptomatic treatment at a later date.

Artelia BuildingDesign works closely with the research departments of the country’s universities and has also been part of Realdania’s demonstration projects, such as Sunde Boliger (healthy housing), Kvotehuset (quota house) and BOLIG+(homes+) project.
