Workshops

Artelia is the engineer for several custom-designed workshops, where there are special requirements for functionality, work environment, and technical installations.

DSB “Freight Yard”

DSB has made significant investments in new electric trains, which will be a crucial contribution to more climate-friendly public transport in Denmark. This includes, notably, the purchase of 100 electric train sets from the French train manufacturer Alstom, which is the largest investment in DSB’s history. These trains will become the backbone of the regional traffic that connects Denmark across its regions and will replace the current IC3, IR4, and IC4 trains.

The ongoing servicing of the trains will take place in newly custom-designed workshops located at each end of the country. This includes a newly constructed workshop in Copenhagen, called the Freight Yard, as the building is situated on the location where Copenhagen’s Freight Yard was located until 1968. The entire project covers an area of 11,500 m². The workshop hall itself is 5,300 m² and houses four tracks where trains can be driven in for servicing. Additionally, there is a wheel lathe building, an outdoor service area, and an administration building.

The workshop is to be certified DGNB Gold for its sustainability efforts.

Grinding and Painting Workshop for S-Trains

DSB wanted to convert their preparation center in Hundige into a grinding and painting workshop so that so-called S-trains could now be painted in Zealand. Previously, they had to be towed all the way to Aarhus, which was not practical, since – S-Trains are solely used in greater Copenhagen

The new function of the workshop required major changes on the installation side, including the ventilation system, lighting, and district heating. In this connection, the BMS system was also adapted to the new conditions, as was the fire alarm system (ABA) in relation to fire safety and ATEX. A new ground slab with ventilation grilles and new interior train tracks were also designed. As part of the project, the welfare and changing facilities were upgraded and expanded.

To give all parties a detailed picture of the existing conditions, Artelia created a detailed 3D survey. This was done by combining an interior laser scan with an exterior drone flyover, where approximately 1,000 photos were taken with very precise geodata. The drone photos were then assembled into a point cloud, which could be combined with the point cloud from the laser scan. The two methods could thus also be used to create a single unified 3D model.

DSB Workshop in Næstved

As part of DSB’s extensive plans to electrify Danish train traffic, a new workshop is being built in Næstved for servicing various types of electric trains. The workshop will primarily handle equipment for regional and international train traffic. Næstved is therefore a suitable location for the workshop, as it lies on the route between Copenhagen and Hamburg.

The double-decker train Bombardier Twindexx will be serviced here, as well as train sets from Talgo and the electric locomotive Siemens Vectron, which DSB refers to as “Denmark’s powerhouse.”

The project covers an area of 36,000 m², with the train workshop itself being 17,000 m². Additionally, there will be a wheel lathe building, an outdoor service area, and an administration building.
