Cycle parking at Copenhagen Central Station

Today, there are approx. 2,000 cycle parking spaces at Copenhagen Central Station and in the next few years, there will be a shortage of five times this amount. It is estimated that there will be room for only 200-400 new spaces in the surrounding areas, which is why innovative and alternative solutions are needed.

The scenario catalogue contains both simple and complex suggestions regarding cycle parking with both pros and cons as well as inspiration from existing cycle parking projects from Denmark and abroad.

The examined possibilities considers establishing cycle parking both at street level as well as in new alternative ways. Artelia has worked with two visionary solutions where bikes will either be placed in a 3-deck basement below the street Bernstoffsgade with direct access to the railway or a new circular design elevated above the railways. This is called the Bicycle Wheel and may hold up to 700 bikes and will be established at street level, hiding the many parked bikes behind existing parapets that surround the open space above the railways.

For each visionary solution, the project team has produced design proposals, cost estimations and impact assessments.
