District heating and cooling

The climate impact of district heating in Denmark will decrease by approximately 80% over a 50-year period from 2025 to 2075, according to forecasts in a new report on future emission factors. A significant reason for this is the expected electrification of district heating, which is already well underway. Artelia is participating in the development of district heating and cooling with several projects.

Surplus Heat from Nugget Factory

Danpo’s factory in Farre produces 1,000 tons of chicken products each week. By utilizing the surplus heat from the freezing process in a new collaboration with Give District Heating, Danpo and Artelia aim for a greener and more efficient energy solution that could potentially cover half of Give District Heating’s consumption.

Synergy plant

The historic Vestre Electricity Plant in Copenhagen is being transformed into a more modern and sustainable power plant in collaboration with Artelia. The building retains its historic architecture while incorporating a synergy plant that combines district cooling and district heating using a CO2 heat pump.

Heat Pump in Vildbjerg

To increase supply security and the share of renewable energy in district heating production, Vildbjerg Varme aimed to establish an air-to-water heat pump with a capacity of approximately 5 MW.

Artelia has assisted the client from the initial process and managed the overall design. Additionally, Artelia handled regulatory processes and, on behalf of the client, secured funding for the establishment from the Danish Energy Agency.

Client  Vildbjerg Varme
Services Overall dimensioning of the plant, preparation and management of the schedule, interface clarification, and project proposal for municipal approval as well as application for environmental approval. Additionally, Artelia managed the tender process, including site inspections, questions, revisions, and evaluations.

Electric Boiler on Masnedø

Vordingborg Kraftvarme A/S aimed to establish an electric boiler with a thermal output of 30 MW on Masnedø.

In relation to the electric boiler itself, Artelia was responsible for:

  • Defining functional requirements and boundary conditions for the new electric boiler plant, new transformers, and new 10 kV system.
  • Detailed design of electrical installations between GIS, transformers, and the electric boiler.
  • Description and schematic diagram for integration with the existing pumping system and VAK.
  • Preparation of functional requirements and boundary conditions for the new electric boiler.
  • Tendering of electrical installation work, transformers, 10 kV system, and electric boiler.
Client Vordingborg Kraftvarme
Services Design and consultancy services for the establishment of the electric boiler; Design and tendering for buildings; Advisory and tendering for the procurement of the transformer and design of the transformer foundation.

Heat Pump in Nykøbing Sjælland

Nykøbing Sjælland District Heating Plant has established a new 7 MW air-to-water heat pump with an accompanying 2,500 m³ tank.

Artelia served as the client consultant in the selection of the future heat source and managed the tender process for both the heat pump and the accumulation tank as a turnkey contract. Additionally, we provided advice on the possible handling of condensate from energy absorbers and managed the dialogue with authorities.

Client  Nykøbing Sj Varmeværk
Services Client consultancy, tendering, environmental management, and handling of condensate.
