Water supply

We help to ensure safe drinking water for future generations, involved in the construction of new water works, development of the grid and establishment of completely new wells. We also consult on dealing with polluted drinking water.

Security Supply in Nibe

Aalborg Municipality’s Water Supply Plan for 2013-2024 initiated a water cooperation project focusing on supply security in the Nibe area. The purpose was to establish a security system for the area’s 19 public waterworks, which are geographically dispersed and in many cases operated by volunteers. Without a security supply, there is a potential risk that citizens could be left without water if a single waterworks goes out of operation.

The planned system consists of security pipelines between the individual waterworks, totaling 21 km, with associated booster stations, meter wells, and connections to the respective supply systems, etc.

Client  Vandsamarbejdet Nibe, Aalborg Kommune og Aalborg forsyning
Services At the start of the water cooperation project, Artelia conducted a comprehensive structural plan for the future security supply in the Nibe area, including capacity calculations, determining future water needs, and setting up a construction budget.
Since then, we have designed approximately 10 km of pipeline and several pressure/pressure reduction stations, as well as conducted tenders, construction management, and supervision for the individual projects.

Lundby Krat Waterworks

The waterworks will provide direct supply to the new university hospital in Aalborg.

The source site includes four abstraction boreholes with an expected total annual abstraction volume of 1,000,000 m³.

The project involves the construction of a waterworks building of approximately 250 m², including a filter room for water treatment (160 m³/h), a pumping facility (240 m³/h), and a two-part clean water tank with a total capacity of 600 m³.

Additionally, detailed design of all raw and clean water pipelines, power supply, SCADA system, and four raw water stations/borehouses.

Renewal of Water Pipelines in Central Aalborg

Artelia has a portfolio of projects concerning the renewal of drinking water pipelines in central Aalborg. These tasks typically involve either renovation and future-proofing or upgrades to meet new supply needs.

The projects are located in areas with significant traffic, access needs for residents and businesses, and other utility lines to consider. The projects require careful planning of execution and strategic considerations regarding the method of implementation, for example, in relation to Documented Drinking Water Safety (DDS according to HACCP principles) and maintaining special supply needs during execution. Both traditional excavation and trenchless methods such as directional drilling and pipe-bursting have been used in the projects.

Ørsted Waterworks – New Supplementary Source Site and Raw Water Pipeline

As part of future-proofing and maintaining supply security for the users of the waterworks, Artelia assisted Ørsted Waterworks AMBA with exploring the possibilities for establishing a new source site.

In connection with the task, potential locations for a new abstraction borehole were determined based on hydrological conditions, land acquisition, protection zones, and routing for new pipelines. The task included tendering and conducting a test pumping and preparing an application for an abstraction permit.

In the hydrogeological assessments, the focus was on the expected water quality and yield, which were subsequently analyzed and validated during the establishment of the test pumping. Following the establishment of the new abstraction borehole, approximately 1.8 km of raw water pipeline will be installed.

Transmission Pipeline from Flødal to Volsted

The new transmission pipeline, totaling 9.4 km, will ensure the transport of drinking water from Volsted Plantage Waterworks to the Flødal reservoir. From there, the drinking water can be distributed to consumers in Aalborg. Additionally, the towns of Ferslev, Ellidshøj, and Volsted will be supplied from the pipeline.

Services Preparation of preliminary project, regulatory and landowner relations, pipeline dimensioning, and determination of the final pipeline route, regulatory processing for obtaining Banedanmark’s crossing permit, detailed design, tendering and contracting, supervision, and construction management.

Truelsbjerg Waterworks

The plant treats approximately 2.3 million m³ of water annually, equivalent to supplying water to about 40,000 consumers. The facility also serves as Aarhus Vand’s research and experimental waterworks for students, companies, and utilities, where new technologies can be tested.
