The municipality of Guldborgsund has initiated an ambitious construction project of a school in the Southeast of Denmark. Artelia is the consulting engineer of the project that will be certified for its sustainability and indoor climate.

The competition for Sundby School at the island Lolland in Southeastern Denmark was recently won by a team consisting of Artelia, Henning Larsen Architects, Skala Architects, BO-HUS, ETN Architects and Autens.

The team is about to make history, since this will be the first Danish school aiming for the Nordic Swan Ecolabel.

There is no doubt, that this cutting-edge project addresses an ongoing issue. In Denmark, a child spends around 11,000 hours at school during these first 10 years of education. Nonetheless, multiple studies have concluded that the general state of the indoor climate in Danish schools is far from satisfactory.

But, in this case, more than 580 pupils and 100 employees will benefit from a high performance indoor environment.

What does eco-labelling for buildings entail?

The Nordic Swan Ecolabel as well as the EU Ecolabel are widely known as respected guidelines for consumers who prefer sustainable, eco-friendly and healthy products. The labels are used for a multitude of convenience goods such as soap, detergent and cosmetic products.

The same basic principles apply for the eco-labelling of Buildings. The Nordic Swan Eco Label sets high standards for the indoor climate including daylight as well as strict requirements regarding health hazardous substances in building materials and chemical products. It also implies sustainable and eco-friendly solutions in all parts of the building project and throughout the entire lifetime. For instance, all timber must be certified for sustainability.

Consequently, Sundby School will require a broad range of expertise, and Artelia provides all engineering disciplines.
