Artelia is involved in the expansion of public transport due to our diverse competencies in infrastructure. Globally, Artelia Group has extensive experience with railways, light rail, metro, and BRT solutions.

Light rail Ring 3

Together with Per Aarsleff and the Spanish company IDOM, Artelia is executing two of the contracts for civil works on the Greater Copenhagen Light Rail. Specifically, the sections that run through Lyngby-Taarbæk and the municipalities of Vallensbæk, Brøndby, and Glostrup.

The Greater Copenhagen Light Rail, planned to open in 2024, will be 28 km long with 29 stations. The light rail will connect five S-train lines and regional train traffic, creating a cohesive high-class public transportation system in Greater Copenhagen.

Conversions of stations on the Ringsted-Fehmarn Line

The project includes the renovation of three stations on the line, including the construction of new pedestrian bridges at five of the stations. The stations are being renovated as the line is being upgraded to a high-speed railway. All design work is therefore carried out according to requirements for speeds of up to 200 km/h.

Bus Rapid Transit in Reykjavik

Design and planning of the first 14 kilometers of the new BRT system in Iceland’s capital. The project is called Borgarlínan and is a milestone in fulfilling the country’s green ambitions.

In line with the Paris Agreement’s goal of CO2 neutrality by 2040, the plan is to make public transport in the Reykjavik region nearly CO2-neutral, with Borgarlínan playing a crucial role. Therefore, the possibility of running solely on, for example, hydrogen is being explored, which Artelia has experience with from other BRT projects in European cities.

Public Transport Towards 2050

Artelia has assisted the City of Copenhagen in analyzing how the public infrastructure can be expanded to accommodate urban development towards 2050. The results were presented in a report published in September 2018.

The comprehensive analysis examined the needs and possibilities for expanding the metro system and the perspectives of light rail and dedicated bus rapid transit (BRT) lines. As a foundation for the analysis, traffic model calculations were performed for no fewer than 30 different scenarios with new metro, light rail, and BRT lines.

As part of the extensive analytical work, Artelia also helped explore the possibility of a light rail from Nørrebro Station to Gladsaxe Trafikplads via Frederikssundsvej. This aspect is based on a collaboration between the City of Copenhagen, Gladsaxe Municipality, and the Capital Region of Denmark.

Bus Depot for Aalborg’s Electric City Buses

Aalborg Municipality originally aimed for the city’s bus operations to be emission-free by 2030. However, the plan was realized 7 years ahead of schedule, as Aalborg bid farewell to its last diesel bus in 2023. The major transition to electric bus traffic required new technical infrastructure, and Artelia served as engineer and client consultant for a new bus depot for this purpose.

The 35,000 m² site accommodates all activities related to the operation and servicing of both electric BRT buses and electric city buses. Parking has been established for 140 electric buses (12-25 m) with associated charging stations, a washing facility, a workshop building, and an administration and crew building. As part of the project, a rainwater basin has also been constructed to manage surface water.

DSB Workshop for electric trains

DSB has made significant investments in new electric trains, which will be a crucial contribution to more climate-friendly public transport in Denmark. This includes, notably, the purchase of 100 electric train sets from the French train manufacturer Alstom, which is the largest investment in DSB’s history. These trains will become the backbone of the regional traffic that connects Denmark across its regions and will replace the current IC3, IR4, and IC4 trains.

The ongoing servicing of the trains will take place in newly custom-designed workshops located at each end of the country. This includes a newly constructed workshop in Copenhagen. The entire project covers an area of 11,500 m². The workshop hall itself is 5,300 m² and houses four tracks where trains can be driven in for servicing. Additionally, there is a wheel lathe building, an outdoor service area, and an administration building.
