IntroductionSustainable transportCycling at ArteliaServicesIntroduction Promoting cycling In Artelia, we aim at making the bike the natural and secure choice in everyday life for all age groups as well as to create healthier and more environment-friendly cities. Through many years, we have gathered and developed ideas and qualifications to make it easy and comfortable for cyclist at all ages. In our experience, solid, technical solutions must be combined with insight into cyclists’ behaviour to create the best solutions for encouraging more people to cycle. This is why we are also an active member of Gate 21 Moving People. Gate 21 Moving People consist of a network of municipalities and companies in the capital region of Denmark who collaborate to put green mobility on the agenda and make it easy to transport individuals in a smart, efficient and green way. In addition to these external networks, many employees at Artelia work with cycling and cover different qualifications related to cycling. With our strong know-how within traffic models, we are able to combine technical knowledge and traditional traffic planning with our qualifications within planning, architecture and communication. We gather information on cyclist behaviour based on e.g. analyses, interviews and specific projects. We use that knowledge when we plan and design urban spaces, cycle tracks and cycle parking. Sustainable transport The UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are being implemented in Artelia’s projects, and Artelia is serious about transforming the concept of sustainability to specific solutions. At the UN summit in New York on 25 September 2015, the world leaders decided on an ambitious, transformative and unprecedented development agenda. The world goals comprises 17 specific goals and 169 subsidiary goals that obligates all UN’s 193 member states to take part in the sustainable development for both people and the planet. In Artelia, we support UN’s 17 SDGs and their focus on the need for developing towards a more sustainable world. With our wide range of services, we are able to contribute to complying with many of the 17 SDGs, and we aim at being a progressive consultant that helps raise the level of ambition. Promotion of cycling as the preferred means of transport may play an important role in the battle to meet UN’s 17 SDGs and create a sustainable future. Artelia focuses on improving conditions for cyclist through strategic as well as physical traffic planning. At a strategic level, we have for instance examined the transfer potential from car to bike and from car to combination journeys with bike and public transport. Many short car trips may be replaced by bike, which will have a positive effect on the CO2 emission. Cycling at Artelia We support employees who choose the bicycle In 2019, we succeeded in reducing our CO2 emissions by 10 %. This is mainly due to the fact that more employees are choosing the bike as a result of our internal cycling campaign. The kick-off was a transportation habit analysis, which clearly showed the potential for promoting cycling, especially, for employees living close to our premises. Therefore, we have launched a number of initiatives to promote cycling instead of driving. We provide free cycling clothing and free bicycle services and the locked cycle parking has been expanded. Furthermore, our employees have the opportunity to raise money for the Danish Cancer Society when cycling to work and between different destinations during work hours. A digital registration system allows employees to register their kilometers and keep track of how much money has been raised. There is also a bit of friendly competition across our offices, which increases motivation. Last but not least, Artelia has been a regular participant in “Bike to Work” for many years. Bicycles take Le MansArtelia helps to create coherence in the cycle traffic in Le Mans through a 315 km network of cycle paths in the French city, which is normally world-renowned for motorsport. A cycle track for students in RoskildeThe two-way cycle track along Store Valbyvej improves safety for pedestrians and cyclists. It is also a part of “the campus path” connecting Trekroner Campus with the future Risø Science Park. Transfer potential from car to green transport modesIn Copenhagen, we have used traffic modelling to analyse the potential for replacing car journeys with combination journeys by bike and train. Alfred Nobel’s BridgeWith a 70 metre long waiving mahogany furniture, the sculptural bridge is not only connecting two neighbourhoods in the South Harbour of Copenhagen. It is also intended to function as an urban space and gathering point. COMPASS – New traffic model for the capital areal of DenmarkCOMPASS is this first activity-based traffic model in Europe, which holds a number of interesting benefits for analyzing transportation patterns throughout the day. Cycle parking at Copenhagen Central StationIn collaboration with Gehl Architects and Juul|Frost Architects, we have provided a scenario catalogue with different suggestions for cycle parking at Denmark’s largest train station.
