Our experience with biomass plants ranges from Denmark’s largest example to smaller local straw-fired heating plants. Therefore, we have an in-depth knowledge of the technology, building requirements, and the specific aspects related to fuel handling. This particularly applies to ATEX and fire safety, where we draw on our expertise in machinery and processes. We also assist customers in optimizing their flue gas treatment to comply with the EU’s emission requirements by 2025.<\/p>\n<\/div>

AMV4 at Amager Power Plant<\/h3><\/div>

HOFOR, which supplies district heating to over 600,000 Copenhagen residents, wanted to convert the energy production at Amagerv\u00e6rket from coal to biomass. This led to plans for a significant overhaul of the plant, including a brand-new power plant unit with a capacity of 400 MJ\/s heat and 150 MW electricity. The unit, named AMV4, covers about 25% of Copenhagen’s heating needs, and Artelia was the engineering firm responsible for all construction and civil works for the new facility.<\/p>\n

The unit itself houses boiler systems, turbine systems, a DeNOx system to reduce NOx emissions, a bag filter to remove particulates from the flue gas, and a flue gas condensation system. Besides the unit itself, the project includes new administration, laboratory, storage, transport, and workshop facilities, as well as a new port facility, which comprises: expansion of the quay, unloading facilities, storage facilities, a yard for whole tree trunks, and transport equipment for wood chips in the form of covered conveyors from the port to storage and from storage to the unit building.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Reconstruction of the Silo at Studstrupv\u00e6rket<\/h3><\/div>

In 2022, a fire broke out in the large wood pellet silo at Studstrupv\u00e6rket, located north of Aarhus, and Artelia has been selected as the engineering firm for the reconstruction. In addition to restoring and improving the damaged systems and installations of the existing silo, several new measures will significantly enhance the safety level. These include new fire detection systems, fire suppression installations, a nitrogen system, and a water mist system.<\/p>\n

The rebuilt silo will be able to store up to 64,000 tons of wood pellets, supplying Block 3 of the plant 24\/7. This block provides heating equivalent to the consumption of 106,000 households and electricity equivalent to the consumption of approximately 230,000 households.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Wood Chip-Fired Plant for Skive District Heating<\/h3><\/div>

With a new wood chip-fired district heating plant, Skive District Heating is expanding its supply area to offer district heating to 2,000 new customers. The idea is to create an efficient and technically well-functioning new facility that also becomes an architectural landmark for the city. The organic structure and green roof allow the building to blend with the surrounding nature, while the transparent facade also provides insight into the technology behind the heat production.<\/p>\n

The wood chip storage, boiler room, and other functions are combined under one roof, ensuring simple operation and maintenance. Everything is designed in 3D, and the individual 3D models are integrated into a larger common model, which also includes the architectural and mechanical models. This common model has been used for collision control and has been a crucial focal point in the design and decision-making process.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Straw-Fired Heating Plants<\/h3><\/div>

Straw is an annual crop that can be sown, harvested, and burned in a recurring annual cycle. Additionally, it is a local resource, which is another significant advantage. Artelia has been involved in the construction of several straw-fired heating plants across the country, and we have several ongoing projects in this area.<\/p>\n

In the construction of straw-fired heating plants in places like Halskov, R\u00f8dby, and Nakskov, we have provided client consultancy services for the machinery and comprehensive consultancy services for the construction and civil works. In other cases, the scope of services varies, and our applied expertise covers both construction technology and process plants. Generally, our experience spans all phases from concept to commissioning.
